Scholarship & Examination Rules

TO ALL THEATRE BRANCH TEACHERS
Conditions of entry to the Association’s Theatre Branches (both UK and North America) is as follows:
Junior Scholarships – Grades 3 and 4
Candidates to be 10 years and under 18 years of age on day of nomination (ie examination)
Senior Scholarships – Grade 5, Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced
Candidates to be 10 years and under 18 years of age on day of nomination (ie examination)

TO ALL FREESTYLE BRANCH TEACHERS
ASSOCIATION RULE 4 PARA 7c
Candidates who are being trained for the Profession or who have taken a professional qualification in any of the Association’s branches, shall not be eligible to take part in amateur test/grade examinations in any branch of the Association or in any of the Association’s Scholarships. Candidates taking part in any of the Association’s Scholarships may not make application to take a professional examination with the BATD until a minimum of 6 months has elapsed following that Scholarship.

1. REQUIRED STANDARDS
Candidates to be 10yrs and under 14yrs for Junior Scholarship and 14yrs and under 18yrs for Senior Scholarship on the day of Examination.
Junior – Full Medals – Gold to Annual Award.
Senior – Full Medals – Gold to Annual Award.

2. ELIGIBILITY:
(a) The candidates for all Scholarships to be recommended by Examiners immediately after examinations, on forms provided by the General Secretary. All candidates must have taken B.A.T.D. examinations.
(b) The winner of a Junior Scholarship will not be eligible to take part in the Junior Scholarship again. Once a candidate is a winner of the Senior Scholarship they will no longer be eligible to enter again.
(c) Since the purpose of the Scholarships is to promote talented students of BATD members, it is mandatory that any student nominated will have been trained in the branch of dance for which they have been nominated within a BATD dance school.

3. VENUES AND DATES:
The venue and date for each Scholarship to be arranged by the Ballroom Committee in conjunction with the Executive Council.

4. POSTPONEMENT OF RECOMMENDATIONS:
This will not be permitted except in exceptional circumstances and then only on the discretion of the General Secretary.

5. ACCEPTANCES:
The closing date for the Scholarship each year will be notified to the teachers and candidates in the paperwork issued from Head Office.  The closing date must be strictly adhered to and no late entries will be accepted.  Any scholarship candidate whose acceptance has not been returned to Head Office by the stated closing date will NOT be permitted to participate in the stated Scholarship.

6. AWARDS
The cash awards will be decided each year by the Executive Council before each Scholarship. Such cash awards will be paid to the teacher of the winning candidate and also to the teacher of the runner-up, with a letter to the winner and runner-up to state that his/her teacher has received a cheque for his/her continued training in the BATD’S syllabus. Quarterly reports would be expected from the teacher on the winning candidate’s progress.

7. SECURITY OF NOMINATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
There must be no communication between the Examiner, Teacher and the Candidate that any recommendation has been made to the General Secretary.  In the event of any misdemeanour the candidate name(s) will be withdrawn.

TO ALL HIGHLAND BRANCH TEACHERS
Conditions of entry to the Association’s Highland Branches UK are as follows:
Junior Scholarships – Grades 2 and 3
Candidates to be 10 years and under 14 years of age on day of nomination (ie examination)
Senior Scholarships – Grades 4, 5 and Elementary
Candidates to be 10 years and under 18 years of age on day of nomination (ie examination)

Conditions of entry to the Association’s Highland Branches North America are as follows:
Juvenile – 10 years and under 12 years on day of nomination (examination). Nominations will be made by the Examiner from Grades 2 to Advanced. Theory papers will be based on Grade 2 and below.
Junior – 12 years and under 14 years on day of nomination (examination). Nominations will be made by the Examiner from any grade from Grade 2 to Advanced. Theory papers will be based on Grade 3 and below.
Senior – 14 years and under 18 years on day of nomination (examination). Nominations will be made by the Examiner from Grades 2 to Advanced. Theory papers will be based on Grade 4 and below.

Since the purpose of the Scholarships is to promote talented students of BATD members it is mandatory that any student nominated will have been trained in the branch of dance for which they have been nominated, within a BATD dance school. The BATD Scholarships are amateur Scholarships and no Professional candidates should enter or take part.
